Supplier Scorecards Built for Development, Not Just Judgement
A supplier scorecard built for development uses fixed indicators and fixed frequency, scoring both current performance and trajectory over time, used to guide improvement, not only to judge, so a supplier improving from a low base is recognised differently than one stagnant at a similar score. A scorecard built purely for judgement tends to discourage the honest reporting that a development-focused scorecard actually depends on to work.
Why a purely judgemental scorecard produces worse data over time
A supplier who knows a low score might mean losing the contract has a strong incentive to present the most flattering possible picture. A scorecard that also credits improvement gives suppliers a reason to report honestly, since the trajectory matters as much as the current position.
What "scoring trajectory" actually adds to the picture
Two suppliers with identical current scores can be in very different positions, one steadily improving, one stagnant or declining. Tracking trajectory alongside current score changes how a buyer should respond to each: continued support versus a harder conversation about whether the relationship should continue.
Why fixed indicators and frequency matter as much as the scoring logic
Comparing suppliers, or the same supplier over time, only works if the same things are measured the same way each time. Ad hoc or inconsistent scoring criteria make the resulting trend data unreliable, undermining the entire point of tracking development rather than a single snapshot.
Sustainability Goals Do Not Mean Anything if You Are Not Looking at Your Supply Chain
Move from a spreadsheet of supplier names to a clear, structured view of the key ESG indicators that matter. We can support your organisation to understand your suppliers' emissions, ESG risks and opportunities, and stay up-to-date with relevant news. This gives procurement and sustainability teams the intelligence they need to manage Scope 3 and make better-informed supplier decisions.
